Out of Place

As many people can relate to, it is hard to perform your best at any position in life when you get ridiculed for being out of place. Even if it is true that one is trying to perform something outside their normal ability, the lack of belief that can come from observers to your ordeal can be overbearing. Personal, my situation came when I played high school football. It was then when I learned what heart was all about.
When I was a youth football player I would be what one considered “fat.” Like any other fat child my age playing football, I became an offensive and defensive lineman. I excelled at my position.
As the years went by, I continued to play as a lineman and won consecutive positional MVPs. Unfortunately, as I approach the time when I entered high school I began to thin out. By the time I was a freshman, I was pretty much just another skinny kid, but I still had my love for being a lineman. Despite my new stature, I decided to stay at my position.
According to my freshman coach I was “completely undersized” to play as a defensive lineman. He feared I would be too easily thrown by offensive lineman. I saw almost no playing time that year and became very discouraged.
I had my doubts about returning to the field once my sophomore year started. I found consolation in my older brother, who was a great athlete. After telling him about my doubts about my ability to play as a lineman he simply responded, “It ain’t about the size of the dog in the fight, it’s about the size of the fight in the dog.” That was all I needed to hear.
I planned my sophomore year in full and managed to make a name for myself as a lineman; however, this was still only JV. In order to be respected at my position i would have to exceed at the Varsity level.
Than began my junior year. At this time I was only 145 pounds soaking wet, but I possessed more heart than anyone else on the field. I fought heart through camp and managed to hone in on my defensive art. I was able to beat my offensive opponents with speed and agility rather than strength. I managed to become an alternate on the starting d-line for our team by our first scrimmage. Suddenly, my worst fears were realized. In one of the first plays I was in, I was brutally blocked and thrown to the ground by a man named Shawn Oakman, a current six-foot eight-inch starter at Baylor.
Naturally as any bad ass would, I persisted to practice and train despite the fact that I was about 60 pounds undersized for my position. One week after our scrimmage, it was time for our first game. In practice the day before the game, I was still in battle for the starting position of the defense as I heard, “And that’s why Willis! That’s why Youngy is getting the start over you. He has more heart, is harder working, and deserves it more than you.” I was elated to hear the cries of d-line coach confirming that I would start the next day’s game, and I did not disappoint.
As I approached the line to start my first series, I heard cries of laughter and shock coming from the opposing players. They could not believe that I was lining up to play defensive lineman. I, the smallest person on the field, was up against a man that weighed almost 85 pounds more than me. The game was a battle from start to finish. Despite my size, I was able to use my agility to make plays as the game went on. At the games end, I was left upset with my performance. Our team had lost the game, and I was replaying every chance I had to possibly turn the game around. At this moment, I was walking off the field seriously doubting my ability to play at my position when the opposing coach approached me.
“Son, I just wanted to let you know that you are one of toughest players I have ever seen play the game.”
The opposing coach, a former Marine and NFL player, told me I was one of the toughest players he had ever seen. Any shred of disbelief I had in myself had vanished. I went on to finish my career at Haverford with one of the highest sacks counts on record and All-County Honors. My experience as a football player helped mold the man I have turned into today.

Dear Mr Q,
The new Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness program is under way and looking promising in Detroit. It seems that Coca-Cola will ultimately find success in their initiative to fund Detroit’s Recreation Department.
This program will provide an important service to the youth in Detroit and their families. In addition to the fitness expertise provided by the veterans, Coca-Cola hope that some values from the veterans will be instilled in the next generation of Detroit civilization. It s important for the youth of Detroit to have good role models to look up to and inspire to be like, and the veterans serving the CCTFF are the perfect candidates for the job. Together with the city of Detroit and the Recreation Department, Coca-Cola plans to instill good character in the future adults of our fine country.
If you are further interested in the CCTFF program, have any questions, or know of any Detroit veterans capable and willingly to teach at the rec centers, please contact us at (313) 224-1121 or online at www.detroitmi.gov.

Web Site Research

Web Site Research

The Lewis Lumber website does a good job in telling the reader about the green ways in which it harvested its wood and how they maximize their resources in order to protect the environment. The left side of the homepage does a good job in allowing the user to quickly finding the type of woodwork they need done. Also, the website does a great job in describing all the different types of wood it has in detail.

Keyword are: Lumber, flooring, paneling, molding, decking, wood oils/finish

Competitors and keywords include: Patterson Lumber Co. – lumber, hardwoods, graded, timber; Baillie Lumber – Hardwood, ripping, grades, timber; and The Hardwood Store of Pa – lumber, moldings, paneling, flooring, Ipe decking material

Patterson Lumber Co. – This lumber company works similar to the Lewis Lumber Company. They offer a multitude of different kinds of hardwoods. They also offer to cut your wood into the exact shape needed in order for one to do any type of project they desire. Along with this, they offer to buy land from people at good prices in order to have more options to get timber.

Baillie Lumber - This company is one of the leading hardwood distributors in North Central Pa. They offer a large array of different hardwoods for any project one may be working on. Collecting wood from all over the world, Baillie offers a wide range of quantity options in order to support large companies or at home projects.

The Hardwood Store of Pa- This website, although short and to the point, does a good job in showing all the different types of wood it offers. Unlike the last two companies, this company offers molding. Along with this and the hardwood selections, The Hardwood Store of Pa allows for a wide range of different projects to be done from large companies to at home projects.

All the websites offer a wide range of photos for the users benefit. The Baillie website appears to do the best job because they have a slideshow on their homepage with photos including the inventory, workers, and forests where the harvest there woods. They also provide a multitude of videos’ which allow the user to what exactly they are going to buy and get more insight about the company which they are buying their wood from. As far as pictures go Lewis Lumber seems to have the widest array of pictures. These include the facilities, all different kinds of wood (like all of them), and the inventory that have at the ready.
.
The main difference between the competitor’s websites and Lewis Lumber website is there use of space and orientation. All of the competitor’s websites posted links to other parts of their website at the top of the homepage, while Lewis Lumber has their links to the side. Furthermore, the other companies’ websites did a tremendous job of using the entire webpage and not leaving any blank space. The Lewis Lumber site has a lot of whitespace to the right side of the page which is unappealing. Also, their contact information should really be posted in another link not at the bottom of the home page. This can make it difficult to find and frustrate the user.

I do think the writing is good in the other websites. They get right to the point, but at the same time manage to show completely what they are offering in services. I also think the writing is fairly good in the Lewis Lumber site and very specific, it is just how they choose to orient their website that I have problems with.

The Lewis Lumber site needs a few more larger and more attractive photos for the user. Although they do have a few photos on their homepage, the Lewis Lumber company needs photos that are more inviting. Their pictures now are boring and do not invite the user to stay on the site. They need something that will better draw the user in.

I think there are a few things that the Lewis Lumber company did well and a few things that their competitor did well. Lewis Lumber offered pictures of all their available types types of woods, which was a unique trait to their website. It allowed the user to know exactly what they were going to buy if they were to order off the phone or online. The competitors to Lewis Lumber had more exciting websites. All of their homepages seemed to do a better job of drawing people in. The diversity of the slides and pictures seems to be Lewis Lumbers main problem as well as their outdated website format.

Tonya Anderson Interview

Dan Young
2/19/15

Tonya Anderson
Tonya Anderson is an exquisite person who comes from a humble background. She has faced many challenges throughout her life and takes a point to always keep her head up high. She prides herself in letting people know that she, despite everything that she has gone through, managed to find a way to be happy in life. For the most part, this is Tonya’s message. She is a firm believer that anything life throws at you, you can make it through. She draws connections to her own life in effort to show people that she is still living and thriving despite the hardships that were thrown her way.
Tonya started from humble beginnings. As a child her parent were unable to make a lot of money and Tonya was not able to live the luxurious life. Despite their lack of money, Tonya still worked hard and made it into the Naval Academy. This is possibly the first time that Tonya ran into a personal problem. She was unable to graduate from the Naval Academy. It was here when Tonya first decided that she wanted to help people.
As far as relationships go, Tonya also had a lot of trouble. Early on in life, Tonya was raped. If this was not enough, once she managed to get in a comfortable relationship Tonya was strangled by her partner. At this point it would be easy to give up on life but Tonya persisted.
After serving as a flight attendant, Tonya moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania in order to be closer to her 15 year-old son, who lived here with Tonya's ex-husband. Tonya again was living a humble existence, this time washing toilets. Eventually Tonya almost did not have enough money to make rent. She began to think extremely badly of herself and was on the verge of ending her own life. Luckily, she has friends in the area and asked one of them to help her out. Her friend was more than happy to help her, and Tonya realized how foolish she was to get so down that she was going to end her life over a couple hundred dollars. Tonya than realized what she needed to do and became the person she is today: a life therapist.
Today, Tonya expresses the importance of an exquisite life. She emphasizes to all whom she talks to that life is a sacred, incredible thing and should not be sacrificed for any reason when people are feeling down on themselves.
“Living with trauma is often a lonely and isolating life. I know. I have lived it. I can tell you this, there is joy on the other side of trauma. Your life is exquisite because no matter what has happened to you, you have survived,” she said. .
After living her personal troubles, Tonya has an extraordinary ability to relate to others in a way that can help them overcome the struggles they face in her own life. She originally realized her ability through volunteering in the community of Williamsport. Tonya currently works as a life therapist. It is her mission to show people that they can not only overcome the troubles that life sends their way, but also manage to become happy after these traumatizing events.
Tonya, along with Robin Van Auken started the Exquisite Life Academy. It is their goal to bring guidance and quality information in order to improve and develop the life of others. Together they offer an extensive range of topics which include, but are not limited to: practical to sublime, technical to spiritual, and from useful to esoteric. It is there hope that together they can inspire the lives of others.
In particular, Tonya's specialties are in suicide, gender based therapy, PTSD, domestic violence, abuse, childhood abuse, and sexual assault . In particular, it is Tonya mission to help people find love, peace, and joy in their lives and relationships; however, Tonya’s work goes far outside the therapy sessions. Tonya has been on a couple of missions to other countries and also helps hold a retreat for women.
The Joyous Prosperity Women’s Retreat holds workshops and therapy session in order to help women who have been through any kind of emotional trauma. Along with the workshops, the weekend is also filled with extensive pampering for the women involved to make them feel completely relaxed in the environment that they are in. . If it has not become apparent yet, Tonya mission is to help people through traumatizing situations that she herself had gone through. She truly does believe that every life is sacred and worth living. She has made it her mission to inspire all those going through misfortune, and help them understand that the not only have the ability to go on, but also be happy in their lives.

The new York Times                                   August 22, 2012

A teenager in New Jersey was left brain damaged after a baseball struck him in a Police Athletic league baseball game. The baseball was hit off a metal bat and managed to strike Steven Domalewski in his chest plate in between heart contractions. After a moment, Steven went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. Steven did not get any oxygen to his brain for at least 15-20 minutes leaving him unable to do any daily functions he once performed.
The Little League organization caught scrutiny for allowing baseball players to use metal bats in there game. The belief is that the metal bats allow for young kids to hit baseballs with more power than the kids in the field can handle. Although the children were not playing in a baseball game at the time, the Little League Baseball organization deemed metal bats as safe to use for children. After this incident and many more, Little league was forced to ban many bats for the 2012 season.

Article 2:
Should Curve balls be banned in Little League Baseball?
CNN (New York City)       Paul Caron           August 25, 2012

At a young age it is not a good idea for young players to throw curve balls. many agree that the torque a curve ball puts on your elbow can not be handled by players younger than thirteen years old. Pitching, especially curve balls, puts a lot of strain on the ulnar ligaments which connect the lower and upper part of the arm.
Some believe that it is not the strain that the curveballs that cause the most damage to the arm, but rather the amount of pitching that young players are being required to perform. A doctor by the name of James Andrew did a study on curveballs in the lab. His results suggested that curve balls do not put any more strain on the arm than throwing a fastball does; however, Andrews believes that throwing curveballs at a young age can lead to problems down the road explaining , “Don’t throw curveballs until you can shave.”
The Little League has enacted rules only allowing children to pitch a certain amount of pitches a week which is a good start. The real problems lies in baseball organizations for young kids that are not connected to Little League baseball. These teams, mostly travel teams, do not have any such regulations on the amount of pitching that a  player can do.
According to both Andrews and Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the mount of elbow ligaments surgeries has been steadily on the rise for years. "Seventy percent of those surgeries are pitchers who haven't hit college yet," Kremchek said. "I ask each one the same question: When did you start throwing curveballs? And they say: 'I was 10. I was 11.' Sometimes, it's 9”, said Kremchek. Obviously if the amount of surgeries being done is primarily on younger kids, something needs to be done about the amount of pitching young kids are allowed to do.

Conflict - Pitching at young age can cause many problems as children grow
Contradiction - Parents and coaches allow their kids to throw more advanced pitches and train them to long
Controversy - Curveballs and prolonged pitching out to much strain on the arms of young pitchers resulting in surgeries
Colorful Language - “Don’t throw curveballs until you can shave”
